Centralized Air Conditioning
Central air conditioning or central A/C refers to a system where the air is cooled at the center. The air is circulated by the central A/C by the system of return ducts and supply. Cooled air is carried by the registers and supply ducts like ceilings covered through grills, walls, floors to the home from the AC. After becoming warmer due to the circulation around the home, the air again blows to the central AC through registers and return ducts.
Types of Central Air Conditioners
There are two types of central AC. These are packaged units or split-system units.
Packaged central AC: In this, the compressor, condenser, and the evaporator are placed in a single cabinet that generally is located on a concrete slab or a roof. Small commercial offices also use such kind of air conditioners. Return ducts and air supply come through indoors from the roof or exterior wall of the house for connecting the packaged AC that is generally placed outdoors. A natural gas furnace or heating electric coils are generally included in packaged ACs. Such a combination of the central heater and air conditioner helps in eliminating the requirement of furnace indoors separately.
Split-System Central Air Conditioning: In this type of AC, an outdoor cabinet of metal have the compressor and the condenser and the internal cabinet have the evaporator. Such an indoor cabinet in many split-systems ACs also has a furnace or the internal portion of a heat pump. The evaporator coils of the air conditioner are installed in the main supply or the cabinet of this heat pump or surface. If a house has no air conditioner but has a furnace already, this AC is a very economical central AC for installing.
