What is Centralized Air Conditioning?
Centralized A/C or central air conditioning works by cooling the air at a central location from which it is circulated to different rooms through supply and return duct system and fans. The compressor also plays a vital role in the conditioning of the air. The warmer air of the house travels through the central air conditioner where the refrigerant gas compresses enabling the discharge of the warm air outside the house through the ducts and registers.
Types of Centralizes Air Conditioning
Centralized air conditioners are of two types: A packaged unit or a split-system unit.
A split-system centralized air conditioning has an indoor and an outdoor metal cabinet. While the indoor cabinet contains the evaporator, the outdoor cabinet carries the condenser and the compressor. Some of the split-system central air conditioners also contain an indoor part of a heat pump or a furnace in the indoor cabinet. The evaporator coil of the air conditioner is placed in the main supply duct or the cabinet of the heat pump or furnace. In homes that have a furnace but not an air conditioner, the most economic choice would be to install a split-system air conditioner.
The packaged centralized air conditioner has the compressor, condenser, and the evaporator placed in a single cabinet. The cabinet is generally installed either on a concrete slab next to the foundation of the house or on the roof. This type of air conditioner is a common choice for small commercial buildings. The packaged air-conditioned which is typically located outside connects with the air supply and return ducts that come from inside through the exterior wall of the home. A natural gas furnace or electric heating coils are often included in the packaged air conditions. Hence, the requirement of a separate indoor furnace is eliminated with the central heater and air conditioner combination.
